Herbert Behrens, age 85, husband of Helen Friel Behrens, died on July 17, 2009 after a short illness.

Herbert was born in Storm Lake, on April 30, 1924. He was the son of Henry Behrens and Frieda Hagmann Behrens. He grew up in Storm Lake. After graduating from Storm Lake High School he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. He spent World War II in the Air Corps' 34th Photo Reconnaissance Squadron in Europe. He was a member of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars.

After the war he married Helen Friel and they settled in Glastonbury, CT where Herb was a successful building contractor for fifty years. He was a lifetime member of the Hartford County Home Builders Association. He was very active in town affairs. For 30 years he was on the Building Commission, most of them as chairman. He was an active member of the Glastonbury Lion's Club. He won many awards for his service to the town. The Glastonbury Rotary Club presented him with a Distinguished Service Award as did the Glastonbury Jaycees. He was a member of The First Congregational Church in Glastonbury for nearly 50 years. He helped the church plan two major expansions. For many years he was on the Board of Directors of the Hammond Acres Association in Goshen, MA where the family had a summer home.

In 1996, he and Helen moved to Wakefield, Rhode Island. He was on the Board of Directors of the Jerry Brown Farm Association, serving as president for three years. As a member of Kingston Congregational Church he ran a Men's Breakfast every week for many years. He loved to cook and was always willing to offer his services when the Women's Fellowship or any other group needed a meal for one of their meetings. Herb also enjoyed volunteering with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife.

He leaves his wife Helen and four daughters: Deborah Behrens of Littleton, Colo., Cynthia Sendelbach and her husband Wayne of Tiffin, OH, Paula Behrens and her husband, Steve Ziegler of Conshohocken, Pa., and Barbara Kay and her husband, Ron, of Brunswick ME. He also leaves five grandchildren: Herbert Sendelbach, Kevin Sendelbach, Paul Sendelbach, Jacob Ziegler, and Madigan Kay. He was predeceased by a brother, Charlie Behrens of Storm Lake.

A Memorial Service will be held in Kingston Congregational Church on Thursday, August 13, at 2:00 PM. Those wishing to make a donation in his memory may make a contribution to the South Kingstown Land Trust, 313 Main St, Wakefield, RI 02879.
