Racheal Richardson 1911 - July 13, 2009
Monday, July 27, 2009

Racheal (Rae) Amen Richardson, a former longtime Storm Lake resident, died on July 13, in Norwalk, Conn. She was just three weeks shy of her 98th birthday.

Born in McCook, Neb., in 1911, she was one of eight children born to German immigrant parents. Rae met and, in 1939, married Orie Richardson, a native Storm Laker. In 1944, Rae and Orie settled in Storm Lake where they raised three sons. In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, Rae also found time for a rewarding career as an administrative assistant in the Registrar's Office at Buena Vista University. She was a valued member of the Registrar's staff for over twenty-five years and was very proud of the fact that she never once took a sick day. One of the highlights of her association with Buena Vista University was the opportunity she had to greet and chat briefly with Dame Margaret Thatcher, a visiting dignitary at the school.

Following her retirement, Rae enjoyed traveling with her family and was very pleased to visit Venezuela, Bermuda, and a number of Caribbean Islands as well as many states in the western US and on the east coast.

In 2007, due to failing health, Rae relocated to Connecticut to be near her oldest son and his family. She is survived by three sons and their families: Ken Richardson and his wife, Chris, of Wilton, Conn.; Richard Richardson and his wife, Mary, of Arvada, Colo.; and Tom Richardson of Centennial, Colo. She is also survived by one sister, Geraldine Bales, and her husband, Bill, of Fullerton, Calif. Also surviving her are seven Richardson grandchildren of whom she was very proud: Rodney and Tanner in Colorado; Ryan, Rex and Ricky in Virginia; David in Connecticut; and Kimberly in New York City. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Rae's husband preceded her in death by many years, having passed away in 1968.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 8, at 10:30 a.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen funeral home in Storm Lake. A light lunch will be served following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels of Storm Lake or to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Donor Services, PO Box 4072, Pittsfield, MA 01202.
