Wednesday, September 23, 2009

Margelet G. Delbridge age 83, of Alta, was called home by the Lord on Sept. 17, 2009 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center following a stroke. Funeral services were held on Monday, Sept. 21, 2009 at the First Presbyterian Church of Alta with Pastor Craig Lee officiating. Burial will be at a later date at the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery of Storm Lake. The Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Margelet was born Oct. 25, 1925 in Early, to Walter and Irene (Peterson) Johannesen. She graduated from Alta High School, where she won many musical awards. As a sophomore, Margelet won a band conducting competition at the state level and became the first Alta student to ever go to the National Contest, which was held in St. Paul, Minnesota that year, earning the privilege to conduct a difficult overture, performed by the St. Paul High School Band.

After Graduation, she worked for Citizen's Bank in their insurance department. Margelet met Carl at a Fireman's Ball in Storm Lake and the two were married on Oct. 10, 1946. They established their home south of Alta where she lovingly raised a family and lived for 60 years.

Marg served her community as Alta School Secretary for twelve years. In addition to her administrative duties, she freely shared her gift of compassion to any child who needed a motherly touch. She also held various leadership roles within the Alta Band Mothers Association. As a member of the First Presbyterian Church, she faithfully served as a Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent; youth group leader, PW chair, deacon and elder. She was a former member of PEO.

After losing her husband of 61 years, Margelet gracefully adapted and lived her last two years surrounded by special friends at WEL-Life in Alta.

Margelet was preceded in death by her husband Carl, her parents, a brother Don, a daughter Linda, a son-in-law Alan Parker, and an infant grandson, Aaron Parker.

She leaves to mourn her children: Lisa Binder and husband Denny of Alta, and David Delbridge and his wife Debra of Alta, a brother Gordon Johannesen and his wife Karen of Alta, and a sister-in-law Carol Johannesen of Spirit Lake. She was "Nana" to seven grandchildren and their spouses and eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
