Thursday, October 1, 2009Robert Cox, age 52, of Linn Grove, died on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2009, at the Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer.
Robert Luverne Cox, son of Lanny and Jeanne (Wharton) Bergman, was born in Rapid City, S.D., Dec. 22, 1956. He lived his youth in Sioux City, and began his education at Emerson Grade School and attended Sioux City West High School. Bob continued his education at Western Iowa Tech.
He was united in marriage to Barbara Wirkus in Elk Point, S.D., on June 20, 1975, and to this union two children were born, James and Bobbie Jo. Following their marriage, they briefly lived in Sioux City before moving to Linn Grove where Bob was in the construction business. Bob became disabled by rheumatoid arthritis, which spread quickly after an accident at the age of 19. He endured over 30 surgeries. Although he was disabled early in life he did his best to enjoy life with his family and friends.
Bob was a member of the NRA and the Bass Masters. When he was younger, he enjoyed racing cars. Bob was a lifelong hunter and fisherman and enjoyed the outdoors. He was proud to have lived to see five generations of his family.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara of Linn Grove; his children: James L. (Jen) Cox of Las Vegas, Nev. and Bobbie Jo (Dr. Tim) Ryan of Kennesaw, Ga.; Three grandchildren: Jake, Connor and Kylee; his father and mother, James C. and Jeanne Cox of Marathon; One brother, Kevin J. Cox of Marathon; his grandmother, Blanche Wharton of Linn Grove; other relatives and his many friends.
Bob was preceded in death by his grandparents, Merle and Leona Cox and his father, Lanny Bergman.
A Memorial Service was held on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009, at Trinity Lutheran Church.
In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to the Robert Cox Memorial Fund at the First State Bank PO Box 461 Sioux Rapids, IA 50585. All proceeds will be sent to Camp Confidence in Minnesota to supply equipment and scholarships for disabled children to help teach them how to fish.
