Reverend Edward G. Murray, 66, of Storm Lake died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center following a courageous 21-month battle with leukemia.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 10:30 a.m., at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison, with Celebrant Reverend Eugene Murray, concelebrants the Reverends Clair Boes, Roger Augustine, Larry McCarty, Richard Remmes, Timothy Schott, John Vakulskas and Patrick Walsh. In attendance will be Bishop R. Walker Nickless.

Visitations will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake with a Vigil Service at 7 p.m. and from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison with a Vigil Service at 7 p.m.

Contributions may be given to an Educational Scholarship Fund established in Father Murray's memory.

Edward George Murray was born on June 18, 1943 in Storm Lake, the son of W. Clare and Mary O. (Kestel) Murray. He attended St. Mary's Catholic School graduating in 1961.

He graduated from Loras College in Dubuque and received his theological training at Mount Saint Bernard Seminary in Dubuque and was ordained on May 24, 1969 at the Cathedral of The Epiphany in Sioux City. Father Murray continued his post-graduate studies at the University of Iowa and at Notre Dame University.

His 40 years of service as a Priest and teacher in the Diocese of Sioux City included the following assignments, Assistant Pastor at the Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City, Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in Fonda, Corpus Christi Parish and St. Edmund's High School in Fort Dodge and was a faculty member at Kemper High School.

As Pastor he served at Our Lady of Counsel in Moreland, Holy Angels Parish, Roselle, Our Lady of Good Counsel, Fonda, St. Michael Parish, Whittemore, St. Rose of Lima Parish, Denison and Sacred Heart Parish in Spencer.

While serving at Whittemore, Father Murray facilitated the construction of a new Parish Center and at Denison facilitated the building of the St. Rose of Lima Church which was dedicated in 2006.

A man of many interests, Father Ed was an avid aviation enthusiast and as a certified member of the "Flying Murray Brother's Gang" he loved spending time flying his classic 1947 Piper Super Cruiser. He was a competent golfer and fisherman and enjoyed painting and sculpting. He was often found cheering on the Minnesota Twins, the Boston Red Sox and the Notre Dame Football team.

Father Ed's family includes his siblings, Mary (Ed) Motz, Sioux City, Kathleen (Bernard) McKenna, San Jose, Calif., Ray (Donna) Murray, Charles City, Paul (Martha) Murray, Storm Lake, Maurita (George) Leahy, Davenport and Reverend Eugene Murray, Marcus. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Lila Murray, Storm Lake, Jane Murray, Sioux Falls, 35 nieces and nephews and numerous grand nieces and nephews and extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Joe and Bill Murray and infant twin sisters.
