Arlo E. Nelson, 94, Alta, passed away Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009 at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community of Storm Lake. A funeral service was held on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2009 at the Our Savior's Lutheran Church of Rembrandt with Rev. Mark Youngquist officiating. Burial was at the Scandinavian of Alta. The Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta was in charge of the arrangements.

Arlo Edvern Nelson was born on Dec. 16, 1914 on the family farm east of Linn Grove, to Aaron and Dora (Bonnichsen) Nelson. He was baptized as an infant at the Methodist Church in Rembrandt, and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Immanuel Lutheran Church of rural Alta, on Dec. 25, 1938.

Arlo attended the Linn Grove School through the 9th grade and then helped his father on the farm. He later farmed in partnership with his father before moving to the farm north of Alta, in the spring of 1937 where he would farm the rest of his life. Farming was his love and he considered himself very lucky to always be able to do it.

On March 5, 1939, Arlo married Elsie Lillian Johnson at the Little Brown Church at New Hampton. To this union two sons were born, Larry and James.

Arlo served as chairman of the Elk Township Farm Bureau for several years and was on the Highview School Board for 12 years. He was on the Immanuel Lutheran Church council and served as chairman and in other offices. Arlo was on the building committee for Immanuel Lutheran Church and for the parsonage. He was custodian for the church for many years as well. Arlo enjoyed giving rides with his team of horses and bobsled or wagon. He would give rides to newly married couples, Christmas carolers, or for family Christmas outings. Arlo spent all of his life around horses and made many wonderful friends through them. He also enjoyed the former Depot restaurant in Alta and suppers with the Wednesday night gang.

He is survived by son, Jim (Cathy), Alta; daughter-in-law, Kathryn Nelson, Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Scott (Carolyn) Nelson, Cedar Rapids; Susan (Scott) Risdal, Boone; Jeni (Boone), Daniel, Wyo.; and J. W. Nelson, Alta; three great-grandchildren, Lexy Risdal. Boone, and Jaren and Joelle Nelson, Cedar Rapids; and sister, Dorren Wingerson of North Carolina.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie, in July of 1986; son, Larry in October of 1986; his parents; sister, Marion Peck; and his brother Melvin Nelson and his wife Olga; and a brother- in-law, Ray Wingerson.
