Lois G. Bruns, 85, Alta, passed away Oct. 8, 2009, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church of Alta with Pastor Terry Pollard officiating. Burial will be at the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery of Storm Lake, Iowa. A visitation will be held on Friday, Oct. 16 from 4 to 8 p.m. with the family present from 6-8 p.m. and an Order of the Eastern Star Service by the Alta Chapter Order of the Eastern Star at 7 p.m.. at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta. The Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta is in charge of the arrangements.

Lois Genevieve Newell Bruns was born on Oct. 10, 1923 to John and Ethel Newell near Storm Lake. She spent her childhood in Storm Lake and graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1941.

Lois worked in the Rationing Office in Storm Lake during World War II and then moved to Chicago where she was employed for a year. She returned to Storm Lake, then moved to Des Moines where she worked until again returning to Storm Lake. She worked at the canning factory in Storm Lake where she met and then married Leslie Bruns. Les and Lois were married on September 18, 1949. They shared 44 years together being blessed with two daughters. Lois worked with Les on their family farm north of Alta doing field work and cooking for field help. Les passed away on March 15, 1994. Lois continued living on the farm until she moved into Wel-Life at Alta Assisted Living Home in 2002.

Lois was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Chapter 138, Alta, serving many positions including Worthy Matron. She was active in the Alta United Methodist Church, served on many United Methodist Women church circles, church officer roles and committees and led the Methodist Youth Fellowship organization with Les for many years. Lois participated in farm, civic and social organizations, was an avid Refunder, enjoyed Alta Study Club, and Wel-Life Bible Study group. She was also active in the organizations and activities of her two daughters.

Lois enjoyed many things including traveling, fishing, playing cards and reading. She and Les spent 11 winters in Harlingen Texas before he passed away. She loved the farm and valued her many friends. Time spent with her daughters, grandchildren, siblings, extended family and friends was precious to her.

She was preceded in death by her husband Leslie; parents John and Ethel Newell; brothers Glenn, John and Howard Newell; sister Grace Strock; parental in-laws George and Sylvia Bruns and many brothers- and sisters- in-law.

Those who will cherish her memory are her daughters, Linda Ecker, Des Moines and Lorna and her husband Joseph Kahl, Scottsdale, Ariz.; her grandchildren, Lisa and her husband Ryan Rendina both currently serving in the United States Army and Anna, Galia and Dennis Kahl, Scottsdale, Ariz.; sisters, Violet LaFever, Storm Lake and Emma Hansen and her husband Harold, Sioux City; brothers-in-law, Orin and Dorothy Bruns, Storm Lake; Delmer and Phyllis Bruns, Alta; George Jr. Bruns, Alta, and Waldo Bruns, North Carolina; many nieces and nephews; and a host of people Lois loved as friends.
