Floyd Nelson was born to N.K. and Agnes Nelson on Oct. 4, 1919, and grew up on a farm north of Alta, with his parents, two sisters, Ruth and Bernadine and two brothers, Woodrow and Alvin. During high school at Highview School, north of Alta, he excelled in track and basketball. While serving in the Coast Guard during World War II, he married Marian Rhode, the sweetheart he met at Calvary Baptist Church in Cedar Falls. Marian and Floyd had two children, Linden and Marilyn. Floyd was an attentive father who worked with his children on school assignments, supported them with their special interests, and was helpful in many important ways throughout their adult years.

Floyd worked in various positions at the Rath Meat Packing Company in Waterloo, for 42 years. He retired in 1981 and moved with Marian to Bella Vista, Ark. In 2007 Floyd and Marian moved to The Springs of Lady Lake, Florida in order to live near their daughter.

In the 1950s, Floyd discovered golf and was an avid golfer for the rest of his life. He was also a long distance jogger for many years, and he played racketball at the championship level until his late 60's.

Floyd was active as a church leader and served as deacon, Sunday school superintendent, and chairman of the church board. He sang in the church choir for nearly every year of his adult life. Floyd lived his faith in service to God and to the church and this showed in his every day behavior.

Floyd and Marian were close companions and enjoyed 67 years of a loving, trusting, and secure marriage. Floyd will be remembered for his friendliness, sense of humor, positive attitude, and abiding Christian faith. Those who knew him are forever grateful for his life. Those surviving him are his wife, Marian, son Linden and Dee, and daughter, Marilyn and Stuart, brother Alvin Nelson of Albert Lea, Minn., sister-in-law Irene Nelson of Rochester, Minn., brother-in-law Wayne Gaston of Aurelia, many nieces and nephews, and friends.
