Doris H. Ohrt, 74, of rural Independence, IA died surrounded by her family, on Sunday, June 16, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospital & Clinics in Iowa City, IA, due to complications of a hemorrhagic stroke.

Doris was born on December 7, 1949, in Manchester, IA, the daughter of Adlia R. Payne Sr. and Lillian M. (Soukup) Payne. She was a 1968 graduate of East Buchanan High School. On June 29, 1968, Doris married her high school sweetheart, Clayton Ohrt, at the Quasqueton Union Church in Quasqueton, IA. In 1982, Doris started working at the Mental Health Institute in Independence and spent over twenty-eight years working there. She worked as a Forms Room Operator, Mail Clerk, and enjoyed giving tours of the facilities and grounds to visitors. Doris was an active member of the American Legion Post 434 Auxiliary and was a Gold Star Sister.

Doris loved being a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She often put her family first and never missed her daughter’s school events. She was their biggest cheerleader and loved letting everyone know who her daughters were. When she became a Grandmother Doris took her position seriously. She made sure to be there to help her daughters raise their children the right way. She helped get her great-grandchildren to all their events, and activities. Her calendar was often filled with everything the grandkids needed.

Doris was proud of her marriage. Over the fifty-five years of marriage, she and Clayton had handled all the stresses and trials that life had for them. Going through the hard times together made their relationship stronger. This is what made Doris the happiest, their love and understanding of each other being unbreakable. She loved their country life on the farm together.

She was an avid bowler and competed for many years in the Independence Bowling League. Doris enjoyed crocheting and made many blankets for gifts for family and friends, and countless fundraisers.

She is survived by her husband, Clayton Ohrt, Independence, IA, her daughters, Rachel (Todd) Ohrt-Mueller, and Marta (Dustin) Peyton, both of Quasqueton, IA., eight grandchildren; Ethan (Kristen) Peyton, Derrick (Abby) Peyton, Seth Peyton, Adam Nash, Courtney Rouse, Madison Rouse, Riley Rouse, Kaylah Rouse, nine great-grandchildren; Ellie, Raegan, Elias, Cora, Eden, Everett, Lynden, Emmy, and Evelyn. A brother, Don (Jan) Payne, Cedar Rapids, IA, a sister, Mary Cerwick, Marion, IA, and many nieces and nephews.

Doris is preceded in death by her parents, Adlia and Lillian Payne, and four brothers: Roy, John, Richard, and Tommy Payne.

A visitation will be held from 5 PM until 8 PM on Friday, June 21, 2024, at the Reiff Family Center – Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, IA.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, June 22nd, at the Quasqueton Union Church in Quasqueton, IA.

Interment will be held at the Quasqueton Cemetery.
