Alan F. Bowers, age 65, of Independence, passed away Friday, June 21, 2024, at home with his family by his side.

Alan Frankie Bowers was born May 12, 1959, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Lynette Townsend and Bill Bowers. He attended various schools growing up. After finishing high school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he served from 1978-1981. He was united in marriage to Joye Bischof on September 9, 1995, at the Middle Amana ballpark. He worked different jobs over the years including managing clubs and restaurants, trucking, and eventually retiring from Rydell of Independence in 2023. He enjoyed camping, fishing; the outdoors, in general, road tripping, riding his motorcycle, making birdhouses, maintaining his backyard garden, spending time with family, being the best Papa to his two grandkids and, of course, the Green Bay Packers.

He supported his community by serving on the Celebrate Indee committee, the planning and zoning board, coaching, and being a founder and active member of the Independence Area Community Theater.

Alan and Joye had just celebrated the 26th anniversary of his kidney transplant which gave them time to enjoy the beautiful life they built together.

He will be remembered for being strong in nature, but with a loving heart, which was so clear in the way that he loved his family and cared for his community.

He is survived by his wife Joye of 28 years, two children, Chantel (Brandon) Muttart of Oelwein, IA, and Brett (Hannah Grace) Bowers of Danville, IA; two grandchildren, Ashton and Sonora Muttart; a sister, Lanie Scheetz; a brother, Tony Schirmer - both of Williamsburg, IA; several brother and sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a niece, Lydia Schirmer.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 PM, Friday, June 28, 2024, at the First United Methodist Church in Independence.

The memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, June 29, 2024, with a visitation to be held before the church service beginning at 9:30 AM. Military honors will be conducted following the service.

Inurnment will be in the Genoa Bluffs Cemetery in Marengo, IA, at a later date. The Reiff Family Center – Funeral Home & Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorials out to the family of Alan Bowers.
