Anna Belle Hickman, 107, of Winthrop died on Thursday evening, December 17, 2020, at ABCM East Campus, Independence. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 22, at Fawcett-Schmitz Funeral Home, Winthrop, with Rev. Cindy Hickman officiating. Visitation was from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Winthrop.

Due to state and federal guidance on gatherings and the recent surge in the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing will be required. Those in attendance are required to wear a mask.

Anna Belle Hight was born on August 5, 1913, in Walker, the daughter of Minnie C. (Kautz) and Elmer E. Hight. Anna Belle completed the family with one brother, Verle, and two sisters, Iva and Gladys.

Anna Belle attended and graduated from Walker Public Schools, Walker. Following her graduation from high school, she attended beauty school and became a licensed cosmetologist. Anna Belle worked at a beauty salon in Independence for several years.

Her career was "put on hold" as World War II escalated. She moved to Burlington to help with the war efforts and was employed at the ordinance plant making shells. When the war was over, she returned to Walker and opened her own beauty salon, which she operated until selling it in 1960.

Anna Belle loved ballroom dancing. It was while attending the regular weekend dance in Oelwein that she met Robert Hickman. Anna Belle was united in marriage to Robert James Hickman on February 20, 1960, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They made their home on his farm south of Winthrop and continued their dancing with friends nearly every weekend.

Robert passed away on April 8, 1982. Anna Belle remained in their farm home for a period of time, but eventually moved to Winthrop to make her home.

Anna Belle continued to work with Kay Norman at Kay's Beauty Salon and, over the years, a close friendship developed. They traveled together by bus and on cruise ships, visiting many U.S. landmarks and several foreign countries.

Anna Belle is survived by three nieces, Carol (Gary) Hahn of Happy Camp, California, Judi Halford of Terra Haute, Indiana, and Teri Sue (Tom) Brickley of Cedar Rapids; and two nephews, David (Cindy) Hickman of Des Moines and Dennis (Jane) Hickman of West Linn, Oregon.

Anna Belle was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters; a brother; a niece, Michelle Lamson; and two nephews, Steve Gaffney and George Ulch.
