William George Schabacker died on Wednesday, August 15, 2012 at the Shell Rock Healthcare Center in Shell Rock, IA.

Visitation will be from 4-7PM on Sunday August 19, 2012 at the Geilenfeld Funeral Home in Oelwein. Funeral Services will be at 11AM on Monday August 20, 2012 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Aurora with Pastor Ron Spears officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, rural Hazleton with Military Honors conducted by the American Legion Ross Reid Post 9 of Oelwein.

Bill was on December 4, 1911 to Adolph and Ida 9Felgenhauer) Schabacker at Mallard, IA. On March 1st, 1912, the family moved to Rochelle, IL. Bill attended Parochial School in Illinois until 1924, when the family moved to Stanley, IA. He continued his education at the Stanley School. He later worked for various farmers in the area.

In 1940, Bill went to Rochelle, IL where he worked for a bleach and dye manufacturer. Bill enlisted in the United States Army in 1942. He served in the 2ndArmored Division in Africa. The European Theater, was in the Battle of the Bulge and received numerous service ribbons. Upon his honorable discharge in 1945, Bill moved to Manchester, IA, where he worked in the Fred Haug Garage for over 20 years. Bill then worked for Henderson Manufacturing Company for 12 years, and then the Manchester Press for 10 years.

On November 25, 1955, Bill was united in marriage with Frances Lincoln at Austin. MN. They made their home in Manchester. Frances passed away on November 17, 1986.

In 1989, Bill moved to Winthrop, IA. He lived there until 1996, when he married Ruth Finck on May 11 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Aurora, IA. They had lived in Waverly from that time until 6 months ago, when they moved to the Meadows in Shell Rock.

Bill was an avid long-time Chicago Cubs fan (since the 1920’s), he enjoyed word search puzzles, as well as riding his stationary bike- working towards 100,000 miles. Most of all, Bill loved to visit with friends and family, telling his stories. He will be greatly missed by all who knew, and continue to love him.

Bill is survived by his wife Ruth; his sisters Dorothy Courtney of Waterloo and Georgia Broome of Rochelle, IL; his brother Norman (Pearl) Schabacker of Winthrop; his sister-in-laws: Marcella Schabacker of Austin, MN and Lyla Schabacker of Prairie Du Sac, WI; numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

Bill was preceded in death by his first wife Frances; his parents; his brothers: Fred, George, Adolph, Clarence and Albert Schabacker; and his sisters: Esther Thompson and Marie Halsne.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice, St. Paul Luthuran Church of Aurora or Bill's family.
