Mary R. Shannon, 77, of Oelwein and formerly of Hazleton and Independence, Iowa died on Friday evening, February 1, 2019 at Mercy One Oelwein Medical Center.

Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at Zion Lutheran Church, Oelwein, with Rev. Joshua Schunk officiating.

Visitation: 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. Monday at Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein and for one hour before the service at the church on Tuesday.

Interment: Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, rural Oelwein, Iowa.

Mary Ruth Boyens was born on February 10, 1941 at rural Lamont, Iowa, the daughter of Raymond William & Esther Elizabeth (Finck) Boyens. She graduated from Lamont High School in Lamont, Iowa in the class of 1958. Mary was united in marriage to Richard Lawrence Shannon on July 29, 1966 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence.

Mary & Richard were blessed with three children, Cody, Christine and Dallas. Mary worked at Anderson’s Five & Dime and was a bartender at the Majestic Tavern both in Independence. Mary became ill in 1980 and retired in 1983 due to her health. Mary was a longtime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence and had previously been a volunteer at the Independence Senior Center. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball fan. Mary enjoyed dancing, sewing, quilting, crafting, ceramics, decorating cakes, family crafting days and spending time with family and friends.

Mary is survived by her 3 Children: Cody(Jeff) Kimball of Quasqueton,Christine(Rick)Tresnak of Dysart & Dallas Shannon of Dysart;

2 Step-Children: Greg(Pam)Shannon of Independence & Tami Hageman of Calmar; 12 Grandchildren; 10 Great Grandchildren; 2 Brothers: John(Janet)Boyens of Davenport & Willis Boyens of Lamont; 4 Sisters: Joyce Schuldt of Winthrop,Thelma Franks of Manchester, Grace Munson of Manchester & Helen Milligan of Waterloo and many Nieces & Nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, husband: Richard on August 28, 1994, step-son: Bob Shannon, sister: Alice, 2 stillborn grandsons and many granddogs.
