Barbara Ann Hahn “Barb” died peacefully on Sunday afternoon, July 8, 2018 at the Evergreen Lodge assisted-living in Northfield, Minnesota. Barbara was born October 13, 1935 in rural Manchester, Iowa. She was the third child of six born to Granville and Edith (DeLancey) Myers. She attended high school in Strawberry Point, Iowa and graduated in 1953. On October 27, 1954, she married Herbert M. Hahn. Together they lived, worked, and raised their 5 children on the farm near Lamont, Iowa where Herb grew up.
Barb is survived by her children: Belinda (Keith) Peterson, Rhonda (Paul) Larson, Daniel (Ann) Hahn, Shiela (the late Tom Schwarz), and DeLancey (Lori) Hahn, 15 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, sisters Rosalie Smith and Julia (Charlie Daisy) Faust, brother John (Patricia) Myers, sister-in-law Carol Myers, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Herb, brothers: Gifford Myers and James Myers, sister-in-laws: Ada Myers and Billie Myers, brother-in-laws: Linford Smith and Gordon Faust, and son-in-law Tom Schwarz.
Barbara’s life will be celebrated at the Methodist Church in Lamont, IA on Saturday, July 14th at 11AM with visitation from 9-11AM. Following a luncheon reception, interment will be at Union Cemetery- 4 miles from the family farm. A Memorial Service at Northfield Retirement Community Chapel will also be observed on Thursday, July 19th at 2PM with refreshments to follow.
Barb was a hard worker. She’d do chores in the barn, work an 8 hour day as a nursing assistant at the Strawberry Point Lutheran Home, and then return home to help with chores again. She loved to cook meals for family gatherings and bake all kinds of cookies, bars, pies, and quick breads. Many enjoyed the 100-200 loaves of quick breads she baked as Christmas gifts each year.
When her memory was becoming more challenging, Barbara moved to the Northfield Retirement Community in Northfield, MN on July 13, 2013. There she made friends with staff and other residents; her quick wit and humor endeared her to many. They also remember her sweet soprano voice as she recalled many hymns of faith at worship services. She received excellent hospice care provided by the staff and Brighton Hospice. At the end, loved ones and staff surrounded her bedside or talked to her via the phone, recalling special memories and thanking her for her love.
Memorials are preferred to the Northfield Retirement Community, Salvation Army, and Oelwein Mercy Hospital.
