Harvey Harrison Love was born on January 8, 1917, near Quasqueton, Iowa, to (Benjamin) Harrison and Mary Crawford Love. His family moved to several farms and lived north of Lamont, Iowa, near County Corners where he attended Sheldon Country School through 8th grade. While attending Lamont High School, Harvey participated in competitive sports, academic and Ag judging teams, graduating with the Lamont Class of 1934. The Love family moved in 1939, to the farm they purchased, north of Oran, Iowa.
After being drafted into World War II, Harvey was a member of the ETO Combat Infantry, rising to the rank of T/5, earning a Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and five Battle Stars. Returning from the war, Harvey married Glatha Ehlers, whom he later divorced. In October of 1966, he married Jean Miller Schlumbohm and lived on her farm, north of Aurora, Iowa. Harvey became Jean’s faithful caregiver when she was diagnosed with cancer, until her death in February of 1988. He married Ruth Dewees Gallup on July 14, 1989, spending their summers on her farm near Aurora and wintering at Fort Dade and Ridge Manor, Florida. She died on January 7, 2017.
He was a member of VFW 1725, Aurora Legion Post 435, 2nd Armored Division Association “Hell on Wheels”, Moose and Elks Lodges, and Brown Swiss Cattle Breeders Association. A life-long Methodist, Harvey was a member of the Aurora, as well as, the Ridge Manor United Methodist Churches.
On July 6, 2018, at the age of 101, Harvey H. Love entered into his eternal rest at Lexington Estates, Independence, Iowa.
Proceeding him in death were his parents; his three wives; two sisters: Lois Whitcher Jahnke and Marian Erickson; two nephews: Bruce and Dean Whitcher; and Jean’s daughter, Colleen Koch.
Survivors include his two step daughters and families: Fran (Gay) Bowden of West Union, IA, and Lois (Charles) Tempus of Aurora; step son-in-law and family: La Vern Koch of Aurora; three nephews and families: Wendall (Marsha) Whitcher of West Union; Merle (Kris) Whitcher of Waverly, IA; and Virgil (Jean) Erickson of Waterloo, IA; and two nieces and families: Maryellen (Dave) Bower of Waterloo and Nancy Heilman of Seattle, WA.
Visitation will be held on Monday, July 9, 2018, from 4 PM to 7 PM at the Grace United Methodist Church in Lamont, Iowa, and one hour prior to his Funeral Service on Tuesday, July 10, 2018, at 10:30 AM also at the Grace United Methodist Church in Lamont, Iowa. His casket bears will be: Wendall Whitcher, Merle Whitcher, Virgil Erickson, Tom Tempus, Larry Koch and Greg Blank. Pastor Raelonna Patrick will be officiating and Karen Kramer will be the organist. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery near Aurora.
