Ellen Mae Smith was born December 13, 1930, in Lamont, Iowa, the daughter of Herman J. “Pete” and Ruth Ellen (Lawless) Smith. She graduated from Oelwein High School in 1949. On March 6, 1955, she was united in marriage to Lyle Frank Wilson in Independence, Iowa. They were blessed with seven children who loved and adored them and will keep them in their hearts forever. Ellen was a petite woman with a lot of spunk. Her greatest enjoyments were her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved her chocolate shakes, making crafts and having her grandchildren tease her that they were taller than her. Everyone was welcome at “Ellie’s Deli” and she made the best pies and potato salad. She was a member of Believers in Grace Fellowship and put her trust in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior.

Ellen is survived by her two daughters: Deb (Joe) Conner of Marion and Lori (Dave) Hedrick of Coggon; four sons: Michael Wilson of Cedar Rapids, Jeff (Linda) Wilson of Lisbon, Shawn Wilson of Jeffersonville, VT and Steven (Karen) Wilson of Robins; two sisters-in-law: Virginia Kuper of Independence and Bessie Smith of Oelwein; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild on the way.

She was proceeded in death by her husband: Lyle Wilson in 1998; daughter: Kelly Jeanne Wilson Thompson in 1987; parents: Herman “Pete” and Ruth Smith; four brothers: Herbert, Chester, Glenn and Raymond Smith; and three sisters: Barbara Meinders, Nettie King and Katherine Scovel.

The family would like to thank all the staff of the Memory Care Unit at The Village Ridge of Marion and Hospice for the wonderful care, compassion and kindness shown to their mother, Ellen.
