Alvera “Vera” Geraldine Helle was born February 18, 1927 at Earlville, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Frances Kramer Philipp.

Vera was united in marriage to LaVerne Helle on August 27, 1946, at Earlville, Iowa. To this union three children were born: Richard, Terry, and Judy. Vera decorated cakes including many wedding cakes throughout the years. In 1963, LaVerne and Vera operated Helle’s café in downtown Winthrop until LaVerne’s death in 1975. Vera then started working as a cook at East Buchanan Community Schools. She enjoyed the children so much; baking homemade biscuits, cinnamon rolls and cookies for them.

At the age of 90, Vera entered into her eternal rest on July 4, 2017, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester, Iowa.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, LaVerne; son, Richard; four brothers, four sisters, and many in-laws.

Survivors include her son, Terry (Lynne) Helle of Manchester; her daughter, Judy (Dennis) Childers of Winthrop; six grandchildren: Vicki, Tom (Joann), Jeff (Melisa), and Jason (Amber) Childers; and Austin (Jodi) and Brittney (Jake) Helle; nine great grandchildren: Danielle Childers, Jared Childers, Jessica Yoder, Ashley Childers, Hunter Randall, Hailey Randall, Jake Childers, Jazelyn Childers, and Owen Helle; and in-laws: Earl (Alma) Helle and Mary Helle.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, July 8, 2017, at St. Patrick’s Church in Winthrop with Father David Beckman officiating. Music will be provided by Janet Fangman and St. Patrick’s Choir. Casketbearers will be her grandchildren. Interment will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery at Winthrop.

Friends may call from 4 P.M. until 8 P.M. on Friday, July 7, 2017, at Fawcett Funeral Home in Winthrop where there will also be a CDA rosary at 3:30 P.M.
