Nicholas Michael Shonka, 24, of Independence, Iowa died Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence, IA.

Nick was born on August 26, 1992, in Waterloo, Iowa the son of Michael A. and Kimberly F. (Tudor) Shonka. He was a 2011 graduate of the Independence High School and attended Hawkeye Tech. in Waterloo for the past couple of years. Throughout his education, Nick was employed with Bertch Cabinets in Jesup for a year and later with Target in Waterloo.

He enjoyed gaming, playing cards, ping pong, and pool with his friends, he loved to go camping, cooking and had a great love for animals, especially his two cats Gypsy and Luna. He also played guitar for several local bands.

Nick is survived by his parents; Mike and Kim Shonka, Independence, IA, two sisters; Jennifer (Shane) Krieger, Waterloo, IA., and April (Joe) Dorman, Winthrop, IA. His grandparents; Robert and Marlyn Shonka, Independence, several aunts and uncles, nieces, and nephews, and a special friend Alyssa Wiest, LaPorte City, IA.

Nick was a kind-hearted, compassionate, gentle soul. He had a curiosity about the world, and had such determination for everything he was passionate about. His family meant the world to him, and he meant the world to his family. He cared for the well-being of others and would put anyone before himself. He impacted the lives of many and he will be missed by all.

Private memorial services will be held at a later date at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence.
