John W. Sand, 56, of Independence, Iowa died Sunday morning, October 4, 2015 at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence, Iowa of injuries sustained in an auto accident.

John was born on April 17, 1959 in Independence, Iowa the son of Leo J. and Norene J. (Miller) Sand. He was a 1977 graduate of St. John’s Catholic School in Independence and attended Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, Iowa. On October 28, 1978 he was married to LuAnn Bitterman in St. John’s Catholic Church, Independence, IA and the couple resided in Independence. John farmed with his dad near Independence for ten years then became employed as a conductor with the Canadian National (CN) Railroad for 20 years.

John loved his family and enjoyed fishing and hunting.

He is survived by his wife LuAnn Sand, Independence, IA, two children; Mandie (Bert) Rawlins, Independence, and Mitchell Sand, Chicago, IL. Two grandchildren; Greyson and Quinn Rawlins, his father; Leo Sand, Independence, IA, two brothers; Larry Sand, Lilburn, GA, Bill Sand, Dacula, GA, and two sisters; Connie Frost, Raymond, IA, and Linda Duffy, Fair Play, SC.

He was preceded in death by his mother Norene Sand in 2001.

A mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday at St. John’s Catholic Church, Independence, IA with Rev. Don Plamondon officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 PM Wednesday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence where a Rosary will be recited at 4 PM and a Parish Vigil Service will be held at 7:30 PM Wednesday.
