Helen Joan Sloan, 84, of Independence, died of natural causes on April 24, 2014, at Buchanan County Health Center.

Joan was born on July 6, 1929, in Atlantic, IA, the daughter of Charles and Eva (Parmley) Ruhr. After graduating from Atlantic High School in 1947, she attended Iowa State University for two years. On October 30, 1949, she was united in marriage to Dr. James A. Sloan at the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic, IA. They made their home and raised their family in Independence. Joan was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where she served in the Mary-Sarah Circle. She also belonged to Ladies Literary, Ladies Musical, and PEO.

She was preceded in death by her parents and by her beloved husband Dr. James Sloan, daughter –in-law, Mary Joe Sloan, and a grandson, David Sloan.

She is survived by three sons; James (Mary Kay) Sloan of Pine City, MN, John (Deb) of Boise, ID, and Dr. David (Krys) of Mason City, IA, and one daughter, Michal (Mark) Roskos of Winona, MN; nine grandchildren; Katie (Rick) Trumble, Molly (Rich) Czeslawski, Elizabeth (Daniel) Kozminski, Christina Sloan, Daniel and Mathew Roskos, Andrew, Ian, and Erika Sloan two great grandchildren; Jimmy, and Jordan Czeslawski. A brother Gene (Joann) Ruhr of Columbia, MO, a sister-in-law Marilyn Miller of Hood River, OR.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, April 28th, 2014 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Independence, with Rev. Kurt Bockoven officiating. Inurnment will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 5 PM Sunday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, IA.
