Verlyn H. Hansen, 65, of Independence, Iowa died peacefully on May 5th, 2014 at his home
Verlyn was born August 5, 1948 in Pipestone, MN the son of Leo H. & Margaret L. (Boldt) Hansen. After graduating from Independence High School, he joined the United States Army and served in the Vietnam Conflict attached to the 9th Infantry Division. He served proudly until his Honorable discharge in 1970. On December 24, 1983 he was united in marriage to Donna L. Close at the Buchanan County Court House. He was employed by Edgenton Sanitation from 1979 to 1996, and continued working for Waste Management from 1996 to 2009.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Donna, a son Dennis (Michaela) Graves, Littleton, IA, a daughter Darlene (Marvin) Young, Oelwein, IA, 13 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, two brothers Leland (Julie) Hansen, Independence, IA, and Merlyn (Kim) Hansen, Mesa, AZ, a sister Janice (Larry) Randall, Fairbank, IA, and two nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Leo and Margret Hansen, a brother Roger L. Hansen, a daughter Becky S. Hansen, and a Granddaughter Leia M. Graves.
Verlyn enjoyed playing pool, bowling, fishing, watching WWE wrestling, and the Iowa Hawkeyes Football. He also enjoyed attending V.F.W. meetings, and spending time visiting with all his Amish friends. Most of all he loved playing games with all his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was the biggest kid of all.
Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Saturday, May 10, 2014, at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, IA, with Rev. Galen Smith officiating. Burial with Graveside military honors will be held at the Littleton Cemetery, Littleton, IA. Friends may call from 5 P.M. to 8 P.M. Friday, May 9, 2014, at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory & form 9 A.M. till services on Saturday.
