Virginia Mary Collins, 88 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Monday, November 22, 2010, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence.

She was born on February 21, 1922, in Buchanan County, Iowa, the daughter of Frank Ed and Nona Josephine (Crowley) Hickey.

She graduated from St. John’s High School in 1940. During some of her years in school she lived at the Convent to avoid having to travel into town every day. She also was a graduate of Pitzies Beauty School in Waterloo. On July 30, 1946, she and Glen Collins were married at St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence. They later divorced. Mrs. Collins was a beautician before retiring in 1960. Then she was a care giver in other people’s homes. Mrs. Collins was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence, the Court Ascension #495 C.D.A., and St. John’s Rosary Society. She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed dancing and playing Bingo.

Mrs. Collins is survived by her sister-in-law, Alvera Hickey of Independence, Iowa, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 1 daughter, Karen Miller, 3 brothers, Francis Hickey, Lloyd Hickey, and John Hickey, and 1 sister-in-law, Nina Hickey.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 26, 2010, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence. Rev. Donald Plamondon will be the Celebrant.

On Wednesday, Nov. 24th, there will be a Parish Rosary at 3 p.m. and a Vigil Service at 5 p.m. at the White Funeral Home in Independence.

Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery in Independence.

Friends may call for visitation from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 24th, at the funeral home.
