Lt. Burl L. SLOAN

Independence, Ia. (1948) – Mr. & Mrs. Will A. Sloan received word that the casketed remains of their son, First Lt. Burl L. Sloan, of the United States Army were to arrive Wednesday afternoon at Independence, and taken to the People’s funeral home.

A prayer service will be there Friday at 1:30 p. m. followed by rites at the Methodist church in Brandon (IA) at 2:45 p. m. with military burial rites at the Brandon cemetery.

Lieutenant Sloan enlisted in the army in December 1940, went overseas in 1944. He was killed in action Apr. 12, 1945 near Barby, Germany, doing reconnaissance with the ninth army. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Gold Star posthumously.

He was born at Rowley, (Buchanan Co. IA) Nov. 15, 1921, and married Margaret Bullock Jan. 27, 1943 at Bryan, Tex. He was a graduate of Brandon (IA) High School and attended Upper Iowa University at Fayette, from which he left to join the army.

He is survived by his wife who has remarried, and is now Mrs. Charles Goodman, a daughter, Margaret Lynn, his parents; three brothers, Claire, Gerald and Billy, all of Brandon, two sisters, Mrs. Russell Shaffer, Lilydale, Waterloo, and Shirley, Brandon, his grandmothers, Mrs. Nellie Sloan, Independence, Mrs. Minnie Miller, Brandon, and grandfather, Haller Miller, Rowley.
