Independence - Mildred Anna Knowles, 90 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Friday, October 22, 2010, at the Buchanan County Health Center LTC in Independence.

She was born on January 16, 1920, in Luzerne, Iowa, the daughter of Charles Robert and Marie Irene (Meyocks) Rosensteil. She attended the Fayette County country schools.

On March 5, 1950, she and Joseph Knowles were married in Oelwein, Iowa. He preceded her in death in 1997. Mrs. Knowles enjoyed caring for her family. She was known for painting most anything around the house. And she enjoyed taking outings in the car.

Mrs. Knowles is survived by 3 sons, Bill (Peggy) Knowles of Independence, Iowa, Richard (Robin) Knowles of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and Ronnie (Cathy) Knowles of Ocala, Florida, and 3 daughters, Diane Knowles and Connie Coonrad, both of Independence, Iowa, and Darlene (Bill) Greenwood of Winthrop, Iowa. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and 1 brother, Donald (Joann) Berends of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, 2 sons, Robert Knowles and Donald Knowles, 1 sister, Fern Duckett, and 1 brother, Robert Berends.

Funeral Services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 25, 2010, at the First Baptist Church in Independence with Dr. David A. Larson officiating. Music was provided by Lyn Tackett, organist, and Mrs. Terry Fairchild and Dr. David A. Larson, vocalists. Honorary Casket Bearers were Jolene Greenwood, Allie Knowles, and Cary Prusator. Casket Bearers were Jesse Roscovius, Brian Prusator, Scott McCardle, Steve McCardle, Christopher Greenwood, and Todd Coonrad.

Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 25th, at Woodlawn Cemetery in Oelwein, Iowa.
