Carl V. VanTasell, 83 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Friday, October 22, 2010, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence following a short illness.

He was born in Buchanan County on October 22, 1927, the son of Leon Henry and Verna Imamyrth (Anson) VanTasell.

He attended the Buchanan County country schools and the Rowley High School. On January 1, 1949, he and the former Eleanor J. O’Brian were married at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They farmed near Rowley, Iowa. Mr. VanTasell never really retired. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Rowley and the Farm Bureau. He was formerly a Boy Scout Leader and a member of the Buchanan County Pork Producers. Mr. VanTasell earned many awards for high crop yields in Buchanan County and was named an Outstanding Farmer in the county in 1951.

Mr. VanTasell is survived by his wife of 61 years, Eleanor, 1 daughter, Verna Pierce of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 1 son, Vinton VanTasell of Rowley, 1 grandson, Allen Pierce of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and 2 great grandchildren, Roman Pierce and Ayla Pierce.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his maternal grandparents (who raised him), Gertrude and Sam Anson, 2 sisters, Gertrude O’Brian and Vera O’Brian, and 1 son-in-law, Michael A. Pierce.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 26, 2010, at the United Methodist Church in Rowley, Iowa, with Pastor Sheri Andersen officiating. Honorary Casket Bearers will be Dennis O’Brian, Tracy Lybarger, Dick Thedens, Frank Rehberg, Dick Zieser, and Bob Robinson. Casket Bearers will be Larry Bass, Charles O’Brian, Russell O’Brian, Dean O’Brian, Steve Hamilton, Loren Hamilton, and Daniel Hamilton.

Burial will be in Rowley Cemetery in Rowley, Iowa.

Friends may call for visitation from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 25th, at the funeral home.
