OELWEIN — Alvin LaVerne Klein, 81, of Oelwein, formerly of Independence, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, at Mercy Hospital of Franciscan Sisters, Oelwein, after a lengthy illness.

He was born April 27, 1927, in Osceola Township, Franklin County, son of John and Lydia Sailer Klein. He married Vivian May Hakanson on Aug. 20, 1954, in Manchester.

Mr. Klein graduated from Geneva High School, Geneva, in 1944, and received bachelor’s degrees in vocational agriculture education and animal husbandry from Iowa State University, Ames, in 1948. He taught vocational agriculture, science and math at Mingo High School in Mingo, Delhi High School in Delhi, and Independence High School, Independence. He farmed west of Independence and also owned and operated Klein Implement, Independence. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Independence.

Survived by: his wife; two daughters, Julie Klein of Decorah and Oelwein, and JoAnne (James) Traut of Winthrop Harbor, Ill.; a son, Dr. Jon (Lisa Roudebush) Klein of Indianapolis; two brothers, Earl of Ackley and Raymond (Bev) of Hampton; and three sisters, Matilda Arnold of Manchester, Charlotte Klein of Chicago and Shirley (Tom) Scott of Glen Ellen, Ill.

Preceded in death by: two sisters, Lucille Plagge and Clara Baumgartner.

Private memorial service: will be held at Mercy Living Plus, Oelwein, with inurnment later in Mount Hope Cemetery, Independence.

Memorials: may be given in his name to the Alvin Klein Scholarship Fund, c/o Vivian Klein, 102 Eighth Ave. NW, Apt. 10-B, Oelwein 50662.
