VINTON: Bernard Edward "Ed" Zimpfer, age 74, died May 1, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids following a brief illness.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, May 5, 2008 at St. John Catholic Church in Independence with Father Aloysius Vorwald as Celebrant. Interment will be held at St. John Cemetery in Independence. Friends may call at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel - 212 E. 6th St. in Vinton from 2 to 6 PM on Sunday where a Vigil Service will begin at 6 PM, and from 9 AM until service time on Monday at the church in Independence. A Memorial Fund has been established.
Ed was born November 30, 1934 at independence to Edward and Gertrude (Kuhn) Zimpfer. He attended elementary schools in Rowley and graduated from St. John Catholic High School in Independence. From 1954 to 1956 Ed served his nation in the US Army. On April 28, 1956 he married Barbara J. Higgins at St. John Catholic Church in Independence and the couple later divorced.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Ed retired from the meat packing business in 2005. He had served as a Plant Superintendent for the former Vinton Foods and at Iowa Ham. He was a former member of the Vinton Country Club, Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Post #57 of Vinton and the Moose Lodge in Missouri. He enjoyed woodworking, refinishing metals, fishing, and was an avid antique collector.
He is survived by his sons, Rick (Yvonne) Zimpfer of Vinton, Dennis (Sherry) Zimpfer and their children, Zachary and Ashley, all of Iowa Falls; his sisters, Annette Schwake of Waterloo, and Miriam (Donald) Butterfield of Osceloa; and his special friend, Helena Mulvaney of Missouri.
He was preceded in death by is parents; an infant brother and his infant daughter, Beth.
