Elizabeth M. "Bette" Franz, 89, of Independence, Iowa died Saturday morning at her home in Independence following a short illness.

Bette was born on December 8, 1918 near Mullen, Nebraska the daughter of George A. and Elizabeth G. (Behan) Vinton. She moved with her family to the Masonville, Iowa area and attended the Masonville Schools. She was a 1936 graduate of the Lamont High School in Lamont, Iowa and a 1937 graduate of Paris Beauty Academy. On November 29, 1941 she was united in marriage to William H. Franz in Masonville, Iowa the couple farmed in the Independence area, and Bette operated Bette's Beauty Salon. The couple retired from farming in 1985 at which time they moved into Independence, Iowa.

Bette was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, The St. John's Rosary Society, and the Kitchen Klatter Klub. She enjoyed square dancing, playing cards, gardening, and fishing.

She is survived by six children; Georgia (Tom) Kemmerer, Mt. Home, Arkansas, William Franz, New London, Missouri, Edward (Onie) Franz, Sarasota, Florida, Mary (Leo) Schubich, Independence, Iowa, Jerry (Carole) Franz, Independence, Iowa, and Carol Franz, Independence, Iowa, fifteen grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, and two sisters; Anne Starcevich, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Mary Hamblin, Lamont, Iowa

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband William in 2006, and two brothers; Edward and Gerald Vinton.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday at St. John's Catholic Church in Independence with Rev. Don Plamondom officiating. with inurnment at 9 AM Wednesday in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Independence. Friends may call from 2 to 8 P.M. Monday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence where a rosary will be recited at 3 P.M. and a parish vigil service will be held at 7 P.M. Monday.
