Glenn Arthur Griswold was born on November 26, 1922, at the Griswold farm north of Winthrop, the son of Lee Arthur and Evelyn Dare Wilson Griswold.
He attended grade school at the Fremont Center, graduated with the Winthrop High School class of 1939, and attended Upper Iowa University at Fayette for one year. He farmed with his dad and his brother, Lynn.
Glenn was united in marriage to Harriet Martha Kurtz on June 6, 1943, at the John Kurtz family home in Winthrop. To this union three children were born: Richard Arthur, Nancy Faye, and Robert Glenn.
After being drafted in 1945, Glenn was inducted into the Army at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis, MO. He was sent to Fort Lewis in Tacoma, WA, for basic training and to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX, for his lab technician training. He was stationed at Fort Schnelling in Battle Creek, MI, and Fort Sheridan in Illinois, before his discharge in 1946.
Glenn and Harriet returned to farm the family farm, and help his brother, Lynn, on the mink ranch. They have lived in Winthrop since 1994. He was a member of the Church of Christ United, where he had served on various boards. He had been a 4-H Leader; a board member of Buchanan County Mutual Insurance; a Winthrop American Legion member; and a retired sales representative for Archer Oil and Dekalb Seed companies. He enjoyed hunting, trapping, fishing and spending time with his family.
Glenn entered into his eternal rest on Sunday, November 30, 2008, at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester, following a short illness. He was 86 years of age.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Lynn; and his great granddaughter, Lauren Griswold.
Survivors include his wife, Harriet of 65 years; his three children: Richard (Jane) Griswold of Winthrop; Nancy (Ray) Murphy of Winthrop; and Bob (Kelly) Griswold of Winthrop; seven grandchildren: Raynae (Brett) Zingg; Chad (Maria) Griswold, Jeffery (Danette) Murphy, Jon (Keri) Griswold, Michael Murphy, Bryce Griswold, and Kelci Griswold; eight great grandchildren: Shelbi Murphy, Zachary Zingg, Brandon Griswold, Dylan Griswold, William Griswold, Kayla Murphy, Jenna Murphy, and Owen Griswold; his sister, Jane (Leslie) Cook of Winthrop; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, December 3, 2008, at the Church of Christ United in Winthrop with Pastor Dean Schlitter officiating and Anita Bowden providing the music. Casketbearers will be: Chad Griswold, Jeff Murphy, Jon Griswold, Michael Murphy, Bryce Griswold, and Brett Zingg.
Interment with military honors will be at Fairview Cemetery in Winthrop. Friends may call from 3 PM until 7 PM Tuesday, December 2, 2008, at the Fawcett Funeral Home in Winthrop and after 9:30 A.M. Wednesday at the church.
