Shirley L. Torson, 74, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, formerly of Independence and Fayette, Iowa died Tuesday evening, October 14, 2008 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a short illness.

Shirley was born June 23, 1934, in Independence, Iowa, the daughter of Everett and Lillian (McMillen) Axline. She graduated from the Independence High School and was united into marriage to Francis Shannon. He died on August 1, 1977. She then married Stephen Torson on January 30, 1981 in Fayette, Iowa. She worked as a farmer and then for Honeywell and Schwan’s, but spent most of her life taking care of her foster children and her animals.

She is survived by her husband Stephen Torson of Cedar Rapids, a daughter, Peggy Weyant and a son Karl Torson both of Cedar Rapids, a brother Richard “Bud” Axline of Independence, five grandchildren and five great grandchildren

She was preceded in death by her first husband Francis, a son Steven Shannon and a brother Everett “Jr.” Axline.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Independence, with the Rev. David A. Larson officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. on Friday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, and from 9 A.M. until services Saturday at the church
