Independence - Roger Lee Williams, 67 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Friday, December 29, 2006, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence following a short illness. He was born on January 4, 1939, in Vinton, Iowa, the son of Carl Richard and Mildred Lucille (Carter) Williams. He attended school in Urbana, Iowa. In 1961, he and the former Joan Marie VanRee were married in Independence, Iowa. Shortly after their marriage, Mr. Williams began working in the dairy operation at the Mental Health Institute in Independence, Iowa. When that portion of the institute’s activities was discontinued, Mr. Williams began working in the laundry. He worked at the M.H.I. for 32 years before he was forced to retire due to a disability. Mr. Williams attended the Calvary Evangelistic Center in Independence.
Mr. Williams is survived by his wife of 45 years, Joan, 1 son, Tim (Angie) Williams of Independence, Iowa, and 3 grandchildren, Derek Williams, Emily Williams, and Jacob Williams. He is also survived by 1 sister, Delores Booth of Oxford, Iowa, and 2 brothers, Richard (Polly) Williams and Ronald Williams, both of Brandon, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 1 brother, David Williams.
Funeral Services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 2, 2007, at the Calvary Evangelistic Center in Independence, Iowa, with Rev. William F. Hill officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Dennis Stacey, organist. Casket Bearers were Hank Snyder, Derek Williams, Ben Straw, and Kevin Randall. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence.
