Brandon - William L. West, 85 years old, of rural Brandon, Iowa, died on Wednesday, October 11, 2006, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa, following a short illness. He was born on January 14, 1921, in Mechanicsville, Iowa, the son of Otis LeRoy and Ruth Mae (Tharp) West. He graduated from the Martelle, Iowa, high school with the Class of 1938. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Navy. On June 24, 1951, he and the former Georgia Fay Rouse were married at the Methodist Church in Brandon, Iowa. They farmed in rural Brandon. Mr. West was also a surveyor for the A.S.C. office. Mr. West was a member of the United Methodist Church in Brandon and the Sheehan-Tidball American Legion Post #30. He was also a 4-H leader for 20 years.
Mr. West is survived by his wife of 55 years, Georgia, 2 daughters, Glenda (Al) Westphal of Rowley, Iowa, and Gloria (Keith) Persson of Claremore, Oklahoma, 1 son, Gordon (Kimberly) West of Brandon, Iowa, 14 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren. He is also survived by 3 brothers, Darrell (Doris) West of Onslow, Iowa, Roy Lee (Pat) West of Ravenna, Ohio, and Robert (Algene) West of Sacramento, California, and 2 sisters, Velma Schroeder of Maquoketa, Iowa, and Ruth (Verne) Balster of Marion, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 son, Greg West, 2 twin daughters (Celia and Cathy) in infancy, 1 brother, Hank West, and 2 sisters, Jean Roman and Nancy Coppess.
Funeral Services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 14, 2006, at the United Methodist Church in Brandon, Iowa, with Rev. Julie McCullough officiating. Burial was in Brandon Cemetery in Brandon, Iowa. On Friday, Oct. 13th, there was a Military Service beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the White Funeral Home in Independence, Iowa.
