Independence - Doris Lucille Wehner, 102 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Tuesday, December 5, 2006, at the Buchanan County Health Center LTC in Independence following a short illness. She was born on August 26, 1904, in McDonough County, Illinois, the daughter of Ira Asa and Mary “Mabel” (Chamblin) Derks. She graduated from high school in Carthage, Illinois, in 1921, and completed her normal teaching training in Macomb, Illinois. She taught in a Hancock County, Illinois, country school for 10 years. On August 22, 1928, she and Orville Louis Wehner were married in Carthage, Illinois. He preceded her in death in 1968. Mrs. Wehner moved to Independence in 1973. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Independence, the Independence Garden Club, and the Farm Bureau. Mrs. Wehner was also active with the Women’s Society of Christian Service. She was known as an avid reader and gardener, and also enjoyed baking, sewing and crocheting.
Mrs. Wehner is survived by 3 sons, Carl (Wanda) Wehner of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Roland (Marilyn) Wehner of Iowa City, Iowa, and Nels (Joann) Wehner of Independence, 8 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren. She is also survived by 2 brothers, Royce (Dorothy) Derks of Frankfort, Illinois, and Lawrence (Mary Lou) Derks of Ferris, Illinois.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, 5 sisters, and 1 brother.
Funeral Services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 8, 2006, at the First United Methodist Church in Independence, Iowa, with Rev. Dennis Bailey officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Leo Schubich, organist. Burial was at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 9th, in Oakland Cemetery in Warsaw, Illinois, with Rev. Julie Wehner officiating.
A Memorial Fund has been established for Cedar Valley Hospice (801 1st Street E., Independence, IA 50644) and Buchanan County Health Center LTC (1600 1st Street E., Independence, IA 50644).
