Independence - Gary LeRoy McGill, 56 years old, of rural Independence, Iowa, died on Thursday, February 22, 2007, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, following an apparent heart attack. He was born on April 22, 1950, in Independence, Iowa, son of Wayne LeRoy and Marie Agnes (Wieser) McGill. He graduated from the Independence High School with the Class of 1968.

He served with the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. On May 17, 1969, he and the former Mary L. Crawford were married at St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence, Iowa.

At the time of his death, Mr. McGill was a U.A.W. Safety Rep. at John Deere in Waterloo, Iowa. He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence, Bechter-Boies V.F.W. Post #2440, U.A.W. Local #838, and the Buffalo Creek Golf Club in Winthrop, Iowa.

Mr. McGill is survived by his wife, Mary, 1 daughter, Nikki Murphy of Independence, Iowa, 1 son, Mike McGill of Independence, Iowa, and 2 grandchildren, Kayla and Jenna Murphy. He is also survived by 1 sister, Linda (John) Borrett of Independence, Iowa, 2 brothers, Dwayne McGill of Jesup, Iowa, and Dean McGill of Ft. Myers, Florida, and 1 foster sister, Karen Mulnix of Independence, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother in infancy, and his step father, Ed Langenfeld.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, February 26, 2007, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence, Iowa. Fr. Al Vorwald as the Celebrant. Music was provided by Mrs. Bonnie O’Brien, organist, Mrs. Daryl Johnson, Jr., vocal soloist, and the St. John’s Choir. On Sunday, Feb. 25th, there was a Parish Rosary at 3 p.m., a Military Service at 7 p.m., and a Vigil Service at 8 p.m. at the White Funeral Home in Independence.

Casket Bearers were Brett McGill, Chris McGill, Randy McGill, Jason McGill, Kim Borrett, and Kyle Borrett. Burial will be at a later date.
