Independence - Florence Lucille Polk Matteson, 90 years old of Independence, Iowa, died Thursday, August 03, 2006, at Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo, IA, following a short illness. She was born October 15, 1915, in Winthrop, IA, the daughter of John Henry Polk and Ruth (Brown) Polk. She attended Buchanan County schools and graduated from the Winthrop High School with the class of 1932. She then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, IA. On August 20, 1935, she was united in marriage to Clifford Myron Matteson in Winthrop, IA. He preceded her in death in 1972. Florence was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church in Independence, IA.
Mrs. Matteson is survived by 2 sons, Merlin (Ann) Matteson of Independence, IA, Melvin (Kay) Matteson of Winthrop, IA, 1 daughter Marcia Barske of Independence, IA, 7 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 2 sisters in law, Della Merrill of Winthrop, IA, and Hazel Polk of Independence, IA. In addition to her husband, Clifford, she was preceded in death by her parents, 1 great grandson, Jason Barske, 1 son in law, Don Barske, 3 brothers, Ralph, Gerald and Archie Polk, and 2 sisters, Alice Gissel and Alta Williams.
Funeral Services were at 2:00 p.m. – Saturday, August 5, 2006, at the First Baptist Church, Independence, IA, with Dr. David A. Larson, officiating. Burial was at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Independence, IA.
