Independence - Douglas Merritt Hamilton, 60 years old, of rural Independence, Iowa, died on Wednesday, October 18, 2006, at his home of C.O.P.D.

He was born on April 21, 1946, in Buchanan County, Iowa, the son of James Douglas and Celia Courier (Cook) Hamilton. He graduated from the Independence High School with the Class of 1963 and then earned his bachelor’s degree from Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa. He served with U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. On June 5, 1971, he and the former Ruth Ann Kann were married at the Methodist Church in Fayette, Iowa. They farmed in Buchanan County. Mr. Hamilton was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Independence, the Farm Bureau, and Alpha Phi Omega. Mr. Hamilton enjoyed fishing and playing golf. He especially looked forward to good conversations and visits over refreshments with family and friends.

Mr. Hamilton is survived by his wife of 35 years, Ruth, 2 sons, Charles (Sandy) Hamilton and Michael (Carrie) Hamilton, both of Independence, Iowa, and 1 daughter, Heather (Brian) Day of Iowa City, Iowa. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren and 2 brothers, James (Paula) Hamilton of Sioux City, Iowa, and Richard (Brenda) Hamilton of Bethany, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral Services were held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 21, 2006, at the First Presbyterian Church in Independence, Iowa, with Rev. John Hougen officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Monte Cue, organist, and Mrs. Robert Malek, Jr., vocal soloist.

Duane Horn was an Honorary Casket Bearer. Casket Bearers were Ken Partridge, Dennis Lindsay, John Kitner, Dave Harms, Keith Hodapp, Duane Lampson, Tom Staade, and Dustin Staade. Burial was in Wilson Cemetery in Independence, Iowa.
