Independence - Richard Norman “Dick” Frye, 63 years old, of rural Independence, Iowa, died on Thursday, January 4, 2007, at Naples County Health Care in Naples, Florida, following a sudden illness. He was born on December 11, 1943, in Independence, Iowa, the son of Wilbert Henry “Bill” and Oweetis Porter Frye. He graduated from the Independence High School with the Class of 1963 and then attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. On March 22, 1969, he and the former Lucretia Kay Hansen were married at the First Presbyterian Church in Independence, Iowa. Mr. Frye farmed all of his life. He was a member of the Buchanan County Fair Board for more that 40 years. He was President of that organization for 30 of those years. He was also the Race Director of the Independence Motor Speedway, a founding member of the Midwest Show Calf Producers and a past Elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Independence.
Mr. Frye is survived by his wife, Tish, 3 sons, Rick Frye and Scott (Shalon) Frye, both of Independence, Iowa, and Jeff Frye of Lamont, Iowa, and 2 grandchildren, Carson and Jaxson Frye. He is also survived by his mother, Oweetis Frye of Independence, Iowa, and 1 brother, Robert (Mary Ann) Frye of Lincoln, Nebraska.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Funeral Services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 12, 2007, at the First Baptist Church in Independence, Iowa, with Dr. David A. Larson officating. Music was provided by Mrs. Don Bowden, organist, and Dr. David A. Larson and Mrs. Scott Frye, vocal soloists. Burial was in Wilson Cemetery in Independence.
