Independence - Oweetis Frye, 91 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Monday, February 19, 2007, at the Buchanan County Health Center LTC in Independence following a long illness. She was born on September 2, 1915, in Fayette County, Iowa, the daughter of Herbert and Zora (Tatro) Porter. She graduated from the Fayette High School with the Class of 1934 and then received her teaching credentials from Upper Iowa University in Fayette. She taught elementary school for 4 years in Rowley, Iowa. On March 21, 1941, she and Wilbert Henry Frye were married in Ames, Iowa. They farmed in Buchanan County. He preceded her in death in 1989. Mrs. Frye was well known for her cooking and gardening. She took special care of the homestead until she was disabled with a stroke in 1995. She was a member of the Porkettes Organization and was active as an elder and Sunday School teacher at the First Presbyterian Church in Independence.
Mrs. Frye is survived by 1 son, Robert (Mary Ann) Frye of Lincoln, Nebraska, 5 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, 2 sisters, Kathryn Daley of Waterloo, Iowa, and Margaret Woolf of Kirksville, Missouri, 1 brother, Matthew (Elinor) Porter of West Union, Iowa, and 1 daughter-in-law, Tish Frye of Independence.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and 1 son, Richard Frye.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 22, 2007, at the White Funeral Home in Independence, Iowa, with Dr. David A. Larson officiating. Burial will be in Wilson Cemetery in Independence, Iowa.
Friends may call from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 21st, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family has established a Memorial Fund for the Buchanan County Health Center LTC.
