Independence - Nina P. Freeman, 87 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Friday, July 21, 2006, at West Village Care Center in Independence, Iowa, from complications of cancer. She was a 26 year survivor. She was born on November 7, 1918, in Newton Township of Buchanan County, Iowa, the daughter of Clarence and Lillie Myrtle (Spaight) Butterfield. She graduated from the Quasqueton High School with the Class of 1936. On November 7, 1938, she and Earnest James “Bud” Freeman were married at the Butterfield family home in Quasqueton, Iowa. He preceded her in death in 2000. Before retiring in 1980, she was the bookkeeper for Freeman Electric in Independence, Iowa. Mrs. Freeman was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Independence and the Royal Neighbors. She was an accomplished china painter and enjoyed her family and traveling.
Mrs. Freeman is survived by one son, Harold (Marilyn) Freeman of Independence, Iowa, 2 grandchildren, Chad (Shelly) Freeman of Marshalltown, Iowa, and Ana Freeman of West Des Moines, Iowa, and 2 great grandchildren, Courtney Freeman and Carlos Keegan Freeman.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers, Harold Butterfield, Johnie Butterfield, and Leonard Butterfield, and 2 sisters, Bernice Kress and Veta Ferreter.
Funeral Services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, July 24, 2006, at the First United Methodist Church in Independence, Iowa, with Rev. Dennis Bailey and Alan Boeldt officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Leo Schubich, organist, and Ms. Ana Freeman and Mr. John Bergman, vocal soloists. Honorary Casket Bearers were Chad Freeman, Shelly Freeman, Wayne Wilson, Dean Johnson, Gene Johnson, and Jim Bergman. Casket Bearers were Duane Butterfield, Dean Butterfield, Dick Kress, Alan Kress, Mike Ferreter, and David Sherwood. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence, Iowa.
