Oelwein - Evelyn A. Close, 66 years old, of Oelwein, Iowa, formerly of Independence, Iowa, died on Thursday, July 6, 2006, at her home following a short illness. She was born on January 30, 1940, in Cook County, Illinois, the daughter of Louis Edwin and Evelyn Alta (Halverson) Johnson. She attended the area schools in Illinois. Mrs. Close was married to and divorced from Robert Harn, Sr., Delbert Cornwell, and Ben Close. She worked at several area nursing homes and restaurants, but most recently, she was an oiler on a road construction crew. She loved to tinker with machinery and even though she might have parts left over when she was done, the projects usually worked anyway.
Mrs. Close is survived by 3 sons, Robert (Nellie) Harn, Jr., of Leesburg, Florida, Jeffery (Donna) Cornwell of Oelwein, Iowa, and Kelly (Shelley) Cornwell of Independence, Iowa, and 2 daughters, Veronica (Tim) Kearns and Michaela (Dennis) Graves, both of Oelwein, Iowa. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandson, 2 brothers, Louis Johnson of Jesup, Iowa, and Danny Johnson, Sr., of Independence, Iowa, and very special friends, Jake Gerstenberger of Independence, Iowa, and Rose Steggal of Oelwein, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral Services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 10, 2006, at the White Funeral Home in Independence, Iowa, with Rev. Mike Root officiating. Honorary Casket Bearers were Christopher Harn, Joshua Cornwell, Casey Nissen, Danny Johnson, Jr., Jed Nissen, Spencer Teckemeyer, and Jake Gerstenberger. Casket Bearers were Steven Johnson, Myles Cornwell, Brett Kitchen, Joseph Graves-Friedley, Chase Nissen, and Shannon Harn. Burial was in Littleton Cemetery in Littleton, Iowa.
