Independence - Roger Anderson, 71 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Monday, August 7, 2006, at his home.
Roger was born on November 8, 1934, the son of Charles F. Anderson and Anne (Thompson) Anderson in Clarion, Iowa. He graduated from Clarion High School in 1953. He served in the United States Army as a Military Policeman from 1954 to 1956 in Austria and Germany.
On February 23, 1957, he was united in marriage to Sharon L. Hackbarth in Dows, Iowa, at the Morgan Township Church. After their marriage he attended UNI in Cedar Falls, and received his B.A. Degree in 1960. Upon graduation Roger began work at West Junior High School in Waterloo. For 37 years Roger served the Waterloo School District as a teacher, coach, assistant principal and principal. One of the greatest joys was the opportunity to open two new schools, which were Hoover Jr. High School and Central High School. He took a great deal of pride in the 37 years working with young people and many times got carried away talking about school and those great memories.
Roger and Sharon made their home in Waterloo until 1990 when they built a new home and moved to Independence. This gave them a chance to enjoy golf, friends, and life on the river. Roger was dedicated to his family above all else. His wife of 49 years, his children, and grandchildren were a constant joy in his life.
Survivors are his wife, Sharon, a son, Douglas A. Anderson of Phoenix, Arizona, and his wife, Kris and their two daughters Leah and Katie; a daughter, Michelle (Shelly) A. Bertelli, her husband, Troy, and their two daughters Grace and Sophia. His sisters, Betty (Hank) Delger, Gladys Spainhower, and Helen Busick, all of Clarion, Iowa, Ruth (Harold) Lamfers of Salina, Kansas, Arlene (Brad) Smith of St. Cloud, Minnesota, his brother, Norville (Mildred) Anderson of Clarion, Iowa, and sisters-in-law Ruth (Chuck) Anderson of Clarion, Iowa, and Evelyn (Alvin) Anderson of Eagle Grove, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and by two sisters, Mildred Smith and Julia Swenson and by three brothers, George, Chuck and Alvin Anderson.
Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence, Iowa.
Funeral Services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 10, 2006, at the First United Methodist Church in Independence, Iowa. A Memorial Fund has been established.
