INDEPENDENCE — John J. Hall, 87, of Independence, formerly of Oelwein, died Friday, Feb. 22, at East Towne Care Center, following a short illness.
He was born Dec. 15, 1920, at his parents’ home in Independence, son of Charles Leslie and Ruth Mariah Holmes Hall. In June 1945 he married Maureen Jane Springer at Presbyterian Parsonage in Independence, and they later divorced. In 1973 he married Marianna Bentzel. She died in 1991.
Mr. Hall graduated from Independence High School in 1939 and from Independence Junior College in 1941. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was a prisoner of war in Germany. He retired from the Air Force in 1962 and began a career as an electrical engineer with Westinghouse, retiring in 1991.
Survived by: two sons, Jon L. of Columbia, Mo., and Bruce (Biney) of Bremerton, Wash.; two daughters, Janet (John) Calvin of North English and Pamela (Greg) Allison of Parkersburg; two stepdaughters, Marianna Wolfmeyer of McHenry, Ill., and Celeste LeForte of Cary, N.C.; 12 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; two sisters, Francelia Bowden and Sandy (Daryl) Johnson, both of Independence; a half brother, Charles L. Hall, D.O., of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and a sister-in-law, Donna J. Hall of Independence.
Preceded in death by: two sons, Charles L. and David; a grandson; two brothers, Robert H. and Richard; and three sisters, Celeste Connor, Bettie Beane and Patricia Pyle.
Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at White Funeral Home, with inurnment in Cremation Garden at Mount Hope Cemetery, both in Independence. Public visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with a 7 p.m. military service.
