JESUP — Viola Mae Schmitz, 91, of rural Jesup, died of natural causes, Sunday, February 3, 2008, at West Village Care Center, Independence.
Viola was born December 1, 1916, at LaPorte City, the daughter of Oscea Lange and Allie (Bunce) Lange. Her first husband William Benorden, preceded her in death in 1974. She later married Roman Christian Schmitz, February 24, 1976, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Gilbertville.
She is survived by one brother, Everett (Geraldine) Lange of LaPorte City; one sister, Darlene Hopkins of LaPorte City; three step daughters, Mary (Richard) Kurt of Independence, Doris (Lawrence) Schmidt of Columbus, Mo., Rita (Don) Schmidt of Hudson; three step-sons, Roger (Gloria) Schmitz of Gilbertville, Thomas (Mary) Schmitz of Apache Junction, Ariz., James B. (Teresa) Schmitz of Jesup; 19-step-grandchildren and 32 step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 7, 2008, at Zion Lutheran Church-Jubilee, rural LaPorte City, with Pastor Ernest Elzey officiating. Burial will be St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Gilbertville. Friends may call from 3 p.m. - 8 p.m. Wednesday at the White Funeral Home, Jesup, and for an hour before services Thursday at the church. Memorials will be directed to Zion Lutheran Church-Jubilee rural LaPorte City and to The Bosco System in Gilbertville.
