WINTHROP — Ronald Ray Biekert, 66, of Winthrop, died Monday, Jan. 21, at Buchanan County Health Care Center, Independence, following a lengthy illness.
He was born Sept. 30, 1941, in Waverly, son of Albert and Shirley Henley Biekert. He married Elinor “Ellie” Grandgeorge on April 30, 1961, at irst Methodist Church in Waterloo. Mr. Biekert graduated from high school in Shell Rock in 1959, from Ellsworth Junior College, Iowa Falls, in 1961 and then State College of Iowa (UNI), Cedar Falls, with a degree in teaching in 1964. He taught social studies in Blakesburg for two years, Clarksville for two years and East Buchanan at Winthrop for 30 years, retiring in 1998. He coached boys and girls basketball, also baseball, boys golf and was athletic director at East Buchanan for 20 years. He umpired baseball, softball and basketball.
Survivors include: his wife; a daughter, Chelley (Larry) Koch of Aurora; a son, Christopher of Independence; four grandchildren; and a sister, Deby (Frank) Woodson of Derby, Kan.
Preceded in death by: a brother, Doyle.
Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at Church of Christ United, with burial in Fairview Cemetery, both in Winthrop. Public visitation from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Fawcett Funeral Home, Winthrop, and for an hour before services Thursday at the church.
