INDEPENDENCE — Merritt A. Oline, 80 years old, of Independence, died on Wednesday, January 16, 2008, at the Buchanan County Health Center following a sudden illness.
He was born on December 8, 1927, in Independence, the son of Clarence Oscar and Olive Emily (Elefson) Oline, Sr. He graduated from high school in Independence in 1944. He served in the U.S. Army at the end of World War II. On November 5, 1950, he and the former Esther Lucille Mumford were married at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence. They farmed in Buchanan County. He retired in 2000. In addition to farming, Mr. Oline was also a mail carrier in Rowley. And at other times in his life, he was a census taker, Insurance agent, A.S.C.S. employee, and a parts salesman at Kaesser, Inc., in Rowley. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence, Sheehan-Tidball American Legion Post #30, and the Farm Bureau.
Mr. Oline is survived by his wife of 57 years, Esther; two daughters, Barbara (Arnold) Boehringer of El Segundo, Calif., and Janet Twait of Wilton; three sons, Ronald (Susan) Oline, Roger (Judy) Oline, and Kenneth (Susan) Oline, all of Independence. He is also survived by eight grandchildren; two step grandchildren; one great granddaughter; six step great grandchildren, and one sister, Anna (Elliott) Cooper of Forest City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Karen Oline; one brother, Clarence Oline, Jr. and one sister, Easter DeGroot.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 21, 2008, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence with Pastor Tom Jones officiating. On Sunday, January 20, 2008, there will be a Military Service at 7:00 p.m. at the White Funeral Home in Independence. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence.
White Funeral Home of Independence is in charge of arrangements. Friends may call after 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 20th, at the funeral home.
