INDEPENDENCE - Earl L. Ferris, 87, of Independence, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2007, at West Village Care Center in Independence following a short illness. Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, at the First United Methodist Church in Independence. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.
Friends may call after 3 p.m. on Thursday, at the White Funeral Home in Independence. A memorial fund has been established.
He was born Oct. 31, 1920, in Spencer, Neb., the son of Carl Edgar and Ola Irene (Reeves) Ferris. He graduated from high school in Norfolk, Neb. Mr. Ferris served in the Navy for a short time during World War II. On Sept. 8, 1941, he and the former Marie Marge Gosch were married in Stanton, Neb. They divorced in 2007. On Nov. 3, 2007, he and the former Karen Kay Ortner were married in Independence. Mr. Ferris began working for Fareway Grocery, Inc., in January 1945 at the Fort Dodge store. In December 1947 he started as manager of the new store in Independence. He retired in 1991.
Survivors include his wife, Karen; four daughters, Judy (Bill) Wentz of League City, Texas, Kay Ferris of Eldridge, Jessica Ortner of Independence, and Jennifer Ortner of Jesup; two sons, Ron Ferris of Dickinson, Texas, and Mike (Rebecca) Ferris of Davenport; and 14 grandchildren.
