INDEPENDENCE - Hazel L. Polk, 90, of Independence, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2007, at the Buchanan County Health Center LTC in Independence following a long illness.
She was born March 9,1917, in Buchanan County near Lamont, the daughter of Mortimer Hardin and Grace Mae (Durfey) Matteson. On Aug. 30, 1935, she and Archie Vernon Polk were married at Winthrop (he died in 1999). The Polk's owned and operated a series of small business in Independence including the Home Cafe, the Dairy Queen, and Rush Park Motel and Mobile Home Park. She owned Jeanna's Ladies' Apparel for 20 years.
Mrs. Polk is survived by her children, grandchildren, great grand children and one sister.
Private graveside services were held Wednesday, Sept, 26, at Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence. In celebration of her life, memorials may be given to Cedar Valley Hospice in Independence. White Funeral Home of Independence was in charge of arrangements.
