INDEPENDENCE - Donald E. Schmitt, 81, of rural Independence, died at his home Sunday, July 22, 2007, following a long illness.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, at St. John's Catholic Church in Independence, with burial in the church cemetery. White Funeral Home of Independence is in charge of arrangements.
He was born June 8, 1926, in Dewar, Iowa, the son of Alvie C. and Marguerite (Hudkins) Schmitt. He served with the Army following World War II. On May 22, 1946, he and the former Marva Ann McCardle were married at Independence. They farmed in Buchanan County, Iowa, and Mr. Schmitt also was a truck driver for Janesville Transport, retiring in 1987.
Survivors include his wife Marva; five daughters, Becky (Jary) Shedenhelm of LeRoy, Minn., Nancy (William) Austin of Waterloo, Susan Miller and Lisa (Richard) Moore, both of Independence, and Jody (Kevin) Nie of Cedar Rapids; four sons, Tony (Mary) and Dana, both of Independence, Jeff of Grandview, Texas, and Lew of Springville; 19 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and one daughter-in-law, Sherri Schmitt of Jesup; one brother, Michael (Judy) of Independence; and four sisters, Eunice Corcoran of Waterloo, Rita (Clarence) Michaels and Joane (Gerald) McCalley, both of Independence, and Janice (Chuck) Devens of Dubuque.
