INDEPENDENCE - Walter E. Main, 72, of Independence, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2007, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence following a short illness.
Funeral Services are 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, at the First Presbyterian Church in Independence, with the Rev. John Hougen officiating. Burial will be in Wilson Cemetery in Independence.
White Funeral Home of Independence is in charge of arrangements. A memorial fund has been established.
He was born Jan. 19, 1935, in Independence, the son of Maurice Sterling and Verna Margaretha (Dawes) Main. He graduated from the Independence High School with the class of 1953, and then served in the U.S. Army. On May 4, 1958, he and the former Jean Ann Knoll were married at the First Presbyterian Church in Independence. Mr. Main farmed in rural Independence. He was also active in community and professional groups.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church (former Elder) in Independence and was a director and past president of Farm Service. He. was an Outstanding Young Farmer and a Master Pork Producer. He was also a member of the Family Motor Coach Association and Winnebago 5 + 1.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Jean; two sons, Tim (Terri) Main of Independence, and Doug (Kathleen) Main of Chicago; three grandchildren; and two sisters, Eleanor Green of Cedar Rapids, and Ruth Hart of Jesup. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Vernon and Richard Main.
