INDEPENDENCE - Nina M. Hickey, 87, of
Independence, died on Saturday, June 23, 2007, at Prairie Hills Assisted Living in Independence following a long illness.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 27, 2007, at St. John's Catholic Church in Independence. Fr. Al Vorwald will be the Celebrant. Today, Tuesday, June 26, there will be a Parish/C.DA Rosary at 3 p.m. and a Vigil Service at 7 p.m. at the White Funeral Home in Independence. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery in Independence.
She was born on Oct. 13, 1919, in Fairbank Township of Buchanan County, Iowa, the daughter of William Wesley and Laura Gertrude (Dean) Seamans. She graduated from the Fairbank High School with the Class of 1937 and attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette and Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. On June 4, 1941, she and Lloyd William Hickey were married at St. John's Catholic Church in Independence. They farmed in Buchanan County until 1994. He preceded her in death in 1996. Mrs. Hickey had a varied career. In addition to caring for her family, she taught elementary school in the Buchanan County country schools, St. John's Catholic School in Independence, and St. Athanasius Catholic School in Jesup. She sold Avon products for four and a half years and she was the circulation manager at the Bulletin Journal newspaper in Independence. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, St. John's Rosary Society, Court Ascension #495 C.D.A. in Independence, A.C.C.W., Buchanan County Health Center Auxiliary, and she was a past president of the Buchanan County Genealogical Society.
Mrs. Hickey is survived by two sons, Walter (Judy) Hickey and Larry (Rita) Hickey, both of Independence, and one daughter, Kathy (Jim) DeGeif of Lewisville, Texas, 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, one sister; Juanita Dempster of Cedar Falls, a dear friend, Jay Eddy of Independence, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Calvin Seamans.
White Funeral Home of Independence is in charge of arrangements. Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
